The cold open for this weekend’s “Saturday Night Live” highlighted the very different worlds of Black and white Americans, as hosts for a spoof news show discussed former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin’s trial in the killing of George Floyd.
“Sounds like we all agree there’s no way Derek Chauvin walks away from this,” noted Kate McKinnon, playing half of the white host pair with Alex Moffat on “Eye on Minnesota.”
Kenan Thompson’s character was extremely skeptical, but McKinnon went on to insist there was no way the jury would believe the defense’s argument.
“Let’s just say we’ve seen this movie before,” said Thompson’s partner, played by Ego Nwodim.
“You guys can at least admit this country has made a lot of progress recently,” Moffat insisted.
“For who?” asked Thompson. “When?” asked Nwodim.
The hosts then all agreed that there had been some sad news during the week, when McKinnon pointed out the world had lost “royalty.”
“I’m glad you brought this up,” Thompson responded. “Yes, the rapper DMX died,” Nwodim said.
Moffatt corrected them, pointing out they were actually talking about Prince Philip.
“Meghan Markle’s boyfriend?” asked a perplexed Thompson.
Check out the video up top, and watch for the response to reparations.
