Authorities in England this week issued an image of a man they want to speak to, and social media users thought he bore more than a passing resemblance to former soccer superstar David Beckham.
Police in Hertfordshire county released a grainy surveillance photo of the man who “could help with our inquiries following a theft” from a construction supplies store in the town of Bishop’s Stortford on Oct. 21.
“Definitely David Beckham,” one person lightheartedly responded to the snap on Twitter.
“Hang on a minute that’s David Beckham,” wrote another social media user.
The real Beckham was actually spending family time at the Disneyland theme park in California on the day in question, posting videos and photos to his Instagram account.
A representative of the former footballer, who played for Manchester United, Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan and Preston North End, did not immediately respond to HuffPost’s request for comment on the police picture.
This is not the first time a purported look-alike of a celebrity has been sought by U.K. authorities. Back in 2018, “Friends” star David Schwimmer issued a tongue-in-cheek response after a man who at first appeared to be his doppelgänger was wanted for theft.
“Officers, I swear it wasn’t me,” the actor wrote on Twitter, alongside a spoof video of the surveillance image from police.
